In this altered history story by Todd Strasser, Fallout explores the possibility of what could have happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and what happens when people are trapped and pushed to extremes. It is 1962, and the Cuban Missile Crisis is real in a “hit us at home” horrifying way. Scott does not know what to think or believe – will they ever make it back out alive? Will the radiation level disperse, or will they starve down below the ground? And, because of the mounting tension, there is the more immediate threat of violence among those stuck in the basement. Designed to hold only four people, it now houses ten, and the food supply is dwindling fast. The neighbors ridicule him, but when the nightmare comes true, and Russia bombs the United States, everyone wants in that shelter. No one really thinks it could happen – no one but Scott’s dad, who decides to build an underground bomb shelter. But lately school has been abuzz with talk of Russia and communists, and the threat of being bombed hangs over everyone. It is 1962, and Scott Porter’s main concerns are school, friends, and maybe even girls. Module 7, Historical Fiction – Fallout by Todd Strasser
